CSRO Leadership Connects with State Lawmakers at National Conference of State Legislatures Annual Meeting

Posted: November 18, 2021

The ongoing impact of the pandemic on engaging policymakers made CSRO’s attendance the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) Annual Meeting this month especially rewarding. Over 2,000 state legislators, legislative staff, foreign dignitaries, advocates, and government affairs professionals gathered in Tampa, Florida for three days of policy education, and the long-awaited chance to network in-person.

CSRO President, Dr. Madelaine Feldman (Louisiana), attended the meeting along with Dr. Michael Saitta (Arkansas), Treasurer of the CSRO. Both brought back insights from attending sessions related to healthcare policy, which highlighted issues in telehealth, state Medicaid lawsuits, biomarker testing, and more.

Networking opportunities abounded, with much benefit to CSRO’s policy priorities. Both Dr. Feldman and Dr. Saitta spoke with numerous legislators about utilization management issues and drug pricing reform policies. These discussions help build a relationship for continued engagement during state sessions in the winter and spring of 2022.

The CSRO attends several NCSL meetings throughout the year to help ensure issues affecting the rheumatology community are top-of-mind for state legislators, and we look forward to their next meeting in Seattle, Washington in May 2022.
